Kisenosato wins Day 2, Asashoryu wins Overall Title

Yokozuna Asashoryu won the overall title at the two-day Grand Sumo Tournament in Los Angeles. Asashoryu beat komusubi Kisenosato with an underarm throw in the overall champion playoff to claim the tournament's trophy. Kisenosato beat Mongolian yokozuna Hakuho with a frontal force out in the day's final to set up the playoff.

Yokozuna Asashoryu defeated Komusubi Asasekiryu with tsuridashi maneuver to become grand champion of day one of the 2008 Grand Sumo Tournament at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena on June 7, 2008 in Los Angeles, California. Yokozuna Hakuho was defeated in the semi-finals by Asasekiryu by yorikiri maneuver. Asashoryu will wrestle the grand champion of day two on Sunday for the champions match.

Detailed sumo wrestlers' schedule while in Los Angeles
• June 4, arrival LAX Sumo Group 1, KE-001 8:40am. To hotel by bus. Asashoryu, Kotomitsuki, Chiyotaikai and others.
• June 4, arrival LAX Sumo Group 2, JL-62 11:20am. To hotel by bus. Hakuho, Kaio, Kotooshu
• Hotel: Wilshire Grand Hotel
• June 4, Reception at the Hotel. In front of reception hall, interviews and meeting the wrestlers starting at 6:00 pm. Inside reception hall is for wrestlers and invited guests only.
• June 5, around 11:00 am approximately 15 wrestlers will go by bus to Kodak Theater for commemorative picture. Afterwards, Universal Studio visit and sightseeing.
• June 6, 5:00 pm around 30 wrestlers will go to Los Angeles Dodgers game. Hakuho will throw the opening pitch. -

Sakura has once again organized a Sumo Coloring Contest open to children and the "young at heart" ages 4 years and older. No purchase necessary and entries will be judged on originality and creativity. Prizes will be awarded to the top three winners.

Ticket Giveaway at Japan Family Day

200 tickets were given away by lottery at Tokyo City Cup's Japan Family Day held on Saturday, March 29. The Tokyo City Cup Race is a cultural event run to acknowledge and celebrate the partnership between Santa Anita Race Track and Tokyo Ohi Race Track. Many cultural events took place on that day including Sumo wrestling demonstrations.

"Yagura Banner" at Little Tokyo, Los Angeles

Sumo Yagura Banners promoting the Grand Sumo Tournament are now up in Little Tokyo, LA. Yokozuna Hakuho appears on one of the large banners. The Yagura (fire tower) is located right along the street and is easy to spot. Take a picture right next to it as a souvenir.

Special Event: "Kids vs. Rikishi"
The opportunity of a lifetime for your child to be in the rink with a real sumo wrestlers.
June 7, 2008 (Saturday): 10 children
June 8, 2008 (Sunday): 10 children
1) First come first serve basis
2) Children must be boys 5-10 years old and accompanied by guardian.
3) Nihon Sumo Kyokai will provide sumo belt (Mawashi).
Note: It is ok to have swimming wear under the belt if belt is uncomfortable.
4) Meeting time: 3:30pm (both days). Meeting place will be announced later.
5) To participate in this special event, A-Seat tickets must be purchased for both the child and the guardian. A-Seat tickets are $140 per person and will go on sale starting mid-March, 2008.
Name of child, age, name of guardian, address, phone number. Also indicate the number of tickets you purchased.
Note: Only boys are able to participate in this event.
